FAIZAL DEEN is the author of Land Without Chocolate, a Memoir (2000), Guyana’s first LGB poetry collection. His work appears in numerous journals, magazines, and anthologies, including Thomas Glave’s Our Caribbean: A Gathering of Lesbian and Gay Writing from the Antilles (2008). As a scholar, Deen’s work addresses topics in representational violence and the politics of beauty in Caribbean, Canadian, and Caribbean-Canadian cultural contexts. His most recent poetry collection, The Greatest Films (2016), introduces, through lyric fragments, notions of “creole Islam,” which are specific to histories of Caribbean syncretic identity. Deen lives in Ottawa with Sabrina, a cocker spaniel.
