Atwater Library Community Web Hosting

What is it?

  1. Providing web space to community groups (www.yourdomain.com or www.atwaterlibrary.ca/youroganziation/).
  2. Requires limited computer skills to keep updated.
  3. You can choose from a variety of web-page "designs" which we can apply your own graphics to (so that the website has your look).
Features:
  1. WYSIWYG: A word-processor like interface accessible directly through the website. The only program you need to keep your website up-to-date is your web-browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox).
  2. Share news automatically with other community organizations.
  3. Photo Album
  4. File Attachments
Why is the Atwater Library doing this?

There are essentially three groups of community organizations:

  1. Community groups that have tech-savvy volunteers or staff that can keep their websites up-to-date.
  2. Community groups that have a website but lack tech-savvy volunteers or staff.
  3. Community groups that do not have a website and do not have tech-savvy volunteers or staff.
This really does come down to bridging the technological divide. We are providing sustainable websites to community groups, such as those under 2 & 3. Though, we at the library have technologically savvy staff and volunteers, we still choose to use a content management system. If you are tech-savvy and want to host your own web-site check out Drupal.

What is different than just getting someone to make you a website?

No HTML. Much lower computer skills required to keep your website up-to-date! If you can use Hotmail and MS Word, then you have the required skill set.

How about some geek speak?

We are providing a drupal CMS that is trimmed down to meet the expanding needs of non-profit groups. Complete with RSS, photo galleries, WYSISWG. You can read all about drupal at www.drupal.org.

Is there an example?

Well, this site you are looking at right now is using the system. We will have a test site where you can login to to try out the ability to change content on the fly. In the mean time the picture below shows how content is changed:

So what are the catches?

  1. To participate in our project you need to host your website with us. The software to run a content management (for the server) is free, so your current host (if you have a website) may be able to install it for you. Two finer points though: (1) we provide a simplified content management system, so you may find a full content management system difficult, and (2) the content management software needs continual security updates.
  2. The content that you can easily add to your website, must be relatively straight forward. The document that your are looking at currently is an excellent example of what can easily be down. We have text, and image, and some lists. There are no fancy tables etc.
  3. Not free. The expected fee is about $10 per month.
