Trafalgar School Raises Funds for Atwater Library

On May 3 and 4, 2012 Trafalgar School for Girls held a book sale in support of the Atwater Library, raising over $350. The Library will use these funds for our Digital Literacy Project through which we partner with community groups and schools to get participants using creative digital technologies to express themselves and build their communities. Last year the Library worked with Trafalgar School on two Gender and Mass Media workshops and we’re looking forward to more collaboration this fall. A big THANK YOU to Trafalgar School for their support!

Spring Bloom by Library's Refurbished Tupper Door

This picture, taken on May 3, 2012, shows the Library's magnificent oak door that was refurbished last year with funds raised by our "Building Communities" Campaign and matched by Parks Canada.  In the foreground is our beautiful magnolia tree that was planted by a former President of the Library, Andrea Rutherford Burgess, and her daughter Lynn Burgess, a former member of our board of directors.

Digital Literacy Project Serving Community Groups and Schools

The Digital Literacy Project is an initiative of the Atwater Library and Computer Centre through which we get community groups and schools using creative digital technologies. Go to our website for more info and examples: http://digital-literacy.atwaterlibrary.ca/

Here's a rundown of current Digital Literacy Project activities:

  • Last week we conducted a digital image editing workshop for Regroupement des organismes pour aînés et aînées du sud-ouest de Montréal (ROPASOM).
  • In collaboration with Concordia University, we're continuing to work with the theatre group Ressources ethnoculturelles contre l'abus envers les aînés (RECAA) on a video documentary and social media project for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.
  • This week we start a video and website workshop for a group of refugee women at the Y Residence (next door on Tupper Street) who make crafts from recycled materials.
  • Also this month, we'll be helping the youth at the Pointe-St-Charles Y take photos of and make a video about "Festi Pointe", a community festival taking place on May 21.
  • Later this semester we'll conduct a digital video workshop for Westhaven-Elmhurst Community Recreation Association's Skills Link.

2011 Benefit Cocktail Party "Best Yet"!

Over 300 Atwater Library supporters joined guests of honour Richard Pound and Julie Keith for the organization's 6th Annual Benefit Cocktail Party on November 2. The record crowd had a great time and the event generated over $75,000 net for the Library's educational and cultural programs. This is about 15% of the lean operating budget.
